John Taylor (third prophet):
When we have a stake organization, . . . the presidency of the stake presides over all bishops, high councils, and all authorities of the stake. The several bishops preside over their respective wards and manage their affairs, under the direction of the stake presidency, who in their office and calling are responsible to the First Presidency of the church.

David O. McKay (ninth prophet):
The stake presidency, for example, are set apart to perform certain specific duties. The very fact that they are so chosen implies service to the group over which they are called to preside, and the activities of whose members they have the responsibility of directing.
