Joseph Smith spent his youth in the pursuit of hidden treasure. He possessed several stones of varying colors which he looked into like a crystal ball. This was not uncommon for his day and location. He made money by being employed as a soothsayer. One of his customers became angry with him and took him to court, charging him with fraud and deception.

The Mormon Church has always said this was a story made up by enemies of the Church to discredit Joseph Smith, and asked for proof. Here it is.
