Joseph Fielding Smith (sixth prophet):

Can any doctrine be more cruel and lacking in justice or sense, than to teach that helpless infants, solely dependent for sustenance and every need, are to be forever damned because parents or guardians fail to have them christened by sprinkling on their heads by a priest a few drops of so-called ""holy water"? What mercy is there in the attempt to soften this penalty by saying that such infants will not have sense enough to know what they have lost, when they are denied the presence of their Redeemer and a place in his kingdom?
