PURE NATURE The Northern shore of Lake Huron, and nearby waterways, are especially suitable for extended canoe tours. The delta of the Mississaugi River and the Spanish River with their inspiring landscapes offer quiet, peaceful paddling. Numerous islands are sprinkled along the North Shore, and form the well-known "North Channel". Known for its beauty, clear water, excellent fishing, and diverse plant and animal life, the North Channel provides something for even the most adventurous. Canoe trips along these mostly uninhabited shorelines are always unique wilderness experiences. PICTURE YOURSELF With favourable weather conditions, your guide sounds the wake-up call in the quiet of the morning. Camp quickly comes to life. After a hearty breakfast, we pack up the tents and clean up the camping area. With the canoes loaded we continue our journey. The canoes slice through the mirror-like water. With joy and anticipation we dip, dip and swing our paddles toward the rising sun, where waters and adventures run deep. Reflecting sunrays dance on the water surface as we survey the distance. A cooling breeze blows us forward while the canoes gently glide over the rippling water. Islands frequently intersect our path along the irregular shoreline. Around the next peninsula a beaver, otter, bear, grazing moose or deer might watch us go by. Soft, fluffy clouds occasionally drift overhead. As we savour the serenity of pure nature, we paddle along amongst forests, rocky, windswept terrain and sandy coves. A small scenic island appears ahead and offers an opportunity to eat lunch and take a break to do some exploring. Faintly distinguishable in the distance lies our destination for the day. With slowly increasing wind at our back and the rolling waves, paddling is more challenging and can be quite adventurous. As we approach the end of today's journey, our canoes are carried by the waves into a gorgeous sandy bay. After landing and unloading the canoes, we pitch our tents, the fireplace is built and supper prepared. Here in the wilderness and after the vigours of the day, food has a special flavour and we eat heartily. Later we relax on the beach or by the campfire to chat, sing songs or simply meditate. Before long we retreat into our cozy sleeping bags. Lost in thought we relive the experiences of the day, and anticipate those of tomorrow as we marvel at the beauty of Gods creation. |
