GRAND KNIGHT'S COMMENTS

Brother Knights,
Welcome to fall -like weather in Alabama! Thank you to those who supported our presence at the parish ministry fair. From that we have several new Knights we'd like to welcome into our council: Lamar Jackson, Tony Kwasigroh, James Thomas, and Michael Meade... welcome brothers!

We also had a 2nd Degree ceremony and several of our members were able to attend. Lamar Jackson, James Thomas, and Lane Mousel. Several others wanted to attend but schedules just didn't work out. Stay tuned for an upcoming 3rd Degree tentatively scheduled for September 12.

Thanks to those Knights who supported our special breakfast for our confirmation boys and girls this past Saturday. They surely appreciated it!

We have some significant activities I want to highlight up front:
3rd Degree Ceremony: September 12 (tentatively) at Council 4080, Leeman Ferry. Details to follow.

Monthly Breakfast: September 13. We need volunteers!

Catholic High School Annual Cross Country Track Meet: On September 19, we will support our Catholic High School with volunteers as they host their annual cross-country track meet. The location is adjacent to the Golf Course and tennis courts just south of Airport road (between Memorial Parkway and Leeman Ferry Road). Please contact brother Paul Shea and/or show up at 0700-0730. Help is needed primarily as course guides for our young runners.

Good Shepherd International Food Festival: We will be supporting this effort monetarily with $250 towards a 'moon bounce' AND...we'll be running a hot dog booth. Stop by for a few minutes to help and/or hang out with some of your brother Knights as we boil up some hot dogs and serve them with buns and chips.

October's Monthly Breakfast: We've decided that in future breakfasts (starting October 11), we will transition from china to chinette to assist us clean up (this includes using plastic & Styrofoam cups for beverages). We will continue to use metal flatware. This will greatly reduce table bussing (we'll position trash cans for people to throw away their own plates), washing, and putting away dinnerware.

Tootsie Roll Drive: Our annual Tootsie roll effort (October 16- 18/October 23-25) will take place these weekends. This is one of two events that we call all our council Knights to commit to ... it's one of two core activities (the other being our monthly breakfasts). Please plan on volunteering 2 hours of your precious time for this event.

Fall Social and Invitation Event: We will host our fall social and invitation will be held October 19. This is to have interested catholic gentlemen join us while we eat snacks/beverages and watch Monday Night Football in the Parish Life Center. Plan to join us and bring someone you know who might remotely be interested in the Knights. I joined only 4 years ago because someone just asked me.

Religious Education: Our parish is calling out to our Knights council looking for members to teach Religious Education to our younger parishioners. You'll be set up for success with co-teachers. If interested please send me an email. This is a gr eat opportunity to serve our parish in a unique way if you haven't been particularly interested in some of the events we've got going already.

Vivat Jesus,
Bob Spuhl

DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT'S COMMENTS

Brother Knights,
During the recently held annual meeting for new and returning state deputies, Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson praised members of the Knights of Columbus for setting an all time record for volunteer hours. A total of 68,783,653 hours were reported for the year ending 31 December 2008. On 27 February 2009, the Order hosted a summit on volunteerism where it launched an initiative entitled the "Year of the Volunteer."

As a result of this initiative, each brother Knight has been given the responsibility to participate with our Council by volunteering to support Council, Church, family, community or youth activities. A few examples of these activities are:
  • Being members of Good Shepherd Councils
  • Assisting in liturgy related ministries such as Eucharistic ministers ushers lectors or music
  • Participating in local blood drives, food drives, museum activities, Habitat for Humanity
  • Assisting the youth of our parish in scouting, sporting or educational activities
  • Participating in Council activities such as our monthly breakfasts, recruiting, degree exemplification, or the annual Tootsie Roll Drive.
  • While it is important that each of us participate with our Council by using our time and talents through some degree of volunteerism, it is equally important that a record be kept of the number of volunteer hours that are expended. Please forward me your recorded hours on, at a minimum, a quarterly basis. My email address is kgniadek@aol.com.

I look forward to hearing from each brother Knight as we fulfill the charge of our Supreme Knight in participating and contributing during this "Year of the Volunteer."
    Vivat Jesus,
    Ed Gniadek, Deputy Grand Knight

    EDITOR'S COMMENTS

Just to follow on to what the Deputy Grand Knight said about volunteering. Volunteering to take on another family member's or friend's responsibility like watching children or taking care of animals while that person is off to school for a week or more, so they can fulfill a military obligation or training for a much needed job is also an example of volunteering. Although it may not be a reportable amount of time, it is as important as anything an individual may do for another family member or friend. If the family member or friend knows that what they love is being taken care of and protected in their absences then, they can concentrate on the task before them.

We strive for the greater good; never forget the needs of the individual.
    Vivat Jesus,
    Mike Rose, The Editor

    FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR'S COMMENTS
    Sir Knights,
The Color Corps provided an Honor Guard on 11 August 2009 at St. Joseph Church, for the funeral services of Sir Knight Leo Milewicz. Sir Knights Mervin Eberhardt, Mark Squires, Gordon Keene, Ray Thome, James Miller, and George Jobczynski were present. Gordon Keene and Ray Thome presented the Mass Readings. They also provided an Honor Guard on 13 August 2009, for Bishop Foley at St. Mary of the Visitation Church. Mervin Eberhardt, Mark Squires, and George Jobczynski participated. Bishop Foley was the celebrant for the Novena.

St Mary's church has a new wall thanks to Gordon Keene and crew. There was great fellowship at this event. If anyone missed the Supreme National Convention broadcast on EWTN, Jim Kealin prepared a DVD of the Supreme National Convention. Jim is the Alabama Culture Of Life Director; Carl Anderson promoted him last month.

Continuing with the theme of American women in the history of the United States, the following was taken from:

L'Osservatore Romano Weekly Edition in English 21 November 1988, page 2

Saint Katherine Drexel lived from 1858 until 1955 and was founder of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in 1891. Her feast day is celebrated March 3. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., Katharine was the second daughter of Francis Anthony Drexel, a wealthy banker, and his wife, Hannah Jane. The latter died a month after Katharine's birth, and two years later her father married Emma Bouvier, who was a devoted mother, not only to her own daughter Louisa (born 1862), but also to her two stepdaughters. Both parents instilled into the children by word and example that their wealth was simply loaned to them and was to be shared with others.

Early in life she became aware of the plight of the Native Americans and the Blacks; when she inherited a vast fortune from her father and stepmother, she resolved to devote her wealth to helping these disadvantaged people. In 1885 she established a school for Native Americans at Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Later, during an audience with Pope Leo XIII, she asked him to recommend a religious congregation to staff institutions, which she was financing. The Pope suggested that she herself become a missionary, so in 1889, she began her training in religious life with the Sisters of Mercyat in Pittsburgh.

In 1891, with a few companions, Mother Katharine founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People. The title of the community summed up the two great driving forces in her life - devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and love for the most deprived people in her country.

Requests for help reached Mother Katharine from various parts of the United States. During her lifetime, her congregation opened approximately 60 schools. The most famous was made in 1915; it was Xavier University, New Orleans, the first such institution for Black people in the United States.

In 1935, Mother Katharine suffered a heart attack. Though gradually becoming more infirm, she was able to devote her last years to Eucharistic adoration, and so fulfill her life's desire. She died at the age of 96. Her cause for beatification was introduced in 1966. Pope John Paul II declared her Venerable on 26 January 1987, and she was beatified on 20 November 1988. Finally, on October 1, 2000, she was canonized.
    Vivat Jesus,
    Paul Adams, Faithful Navigator

    St. Vincent de Paul Society

The following is a brief description from the web. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a worldwide organization founded in 1833 by six university students in Paris under the patronage of St. Vincent de Paul. Today the Society includes almost 900,000 members spread among 46,000 confraternities in 130 countries of five continents.
The Society's purpose is to provide direct aid to those who suffer, and to help individuals reduce and even eliminate the causes of their suffering, themselves. Society members use their own resources, sharing not only possessions but also the valuable gift of their presence.
Recently there has been an inquiry about establishing a St. Vincent de Paul group at Good Shepherd. Both the Knights and the St. Vincent de Paul Society have a strong focus on charitable works. The Holy Spirit Parish St. Vincent de Paul group is well established and has been active for many years. If you have an interest in learning more about this society and possibly help establish a group at our parish, please contact John Bellono at 256-882-6767 for more information.

    Canned Goods Drive

Don't forget those canned goods. Each Knight is asked to bring just one canned good or money to the monthly Council meeting. The food or money goes to the Church pantry for support of the poor and hungry in our community. Remember charity is a Knight's duty, not a courtesy.

    Volunteer Hours

Volunteer Hours are due in January of each year to State Office. Please keep a running total of your hours during the year. It would be nice to report them on a monthly basis to the Deputy Grand Knight, as to not make this a major data collection effort at the end of the year. Please tally your volunteer hours for Council, Church, and Community activities and forward them to the Deputy Grand knight as soon as possible but no later than January 15 of each year. It's a time consuming activity to accumulate responses from all our members and summarize them as required - the sooner you can provide them to the Deputy Grand Knight the better. We often overlook community activities such as CASA, Burrett Museum, Habitat for Humanity, Harrison Hardware, and neighborhood swimming associations, etc. Please include these types of community organization activities in your totals. As you compile your volunteer hours, reflect how your time spent in the past year and prayerfully consider how you might better serve those in need in the future. May God Bless all volunteers everywhere no matter where in the world they are.

    PRAYER LINE

Taking care of our Brother Knights in distress is one of basic principles espoused by our founder, Father McGivney. Please remember our sick Brother Knights and those deceased in your prayers. If anyone knows of a Brother Knight in distress, contact Grand Knight Bob Spuhl by telephone (426-0030 or email).

Remember the Prayer Line also includes family members and friends. Being Catholic is not a requirement to have a person's name placed on the prayer Line.

A good person regardless of his or her religious beliefs should have our prayers offered to hopefully relieve their distress.

Please remember the following individuals in your prayers:

  • Mary Puent
  • Pam Godwin
  • Bob Sullivan
  • Janis Schultz
  • Joey Aiello's parents
  • Jerry Dombrosky and his grandchild
  • Rita Lukens

    The Short Story Corner

This month's Short Story comes by way of Brother Bill Siffin of Sterling Heights, Michigan, as told to him by a priest. This is another example of laughing at ourselves.

    Skipping Church
    By Anonymous

Father Norton woke up Sunday morning and realizing it was an exceptionally beautiful and sunny early spring day, decided he just had to play golf.

So... he told the Associate Pastor that he was feeling sick and persuaded him to say Mass for him that day.

As soon as the Associate Pastor left the room, Father Norton headed out of town to a golf course about forty miles away.

This way he knew he wouldn't accidentally meet anyone he knew from his parish. Setting up on the first tee, he was alone.

After all, it was Sunday morning and everyone else was in church! At about this time, Saint Peter leaned over to the Lord while looking down from the heavens and exclaimed, "You're not going to let him get away with this, are you?"

The Lord sighed, and said, "No, I guess not."

Just then Father Norton hit the ball and it shot straight towards the pin, dropping just short of it, rolled up and fell into the hole...

It was a 420-yard hole in one!

St. Peter was astonished. He looked at the Lord and asked, "Why did you let him do that?"

The Lord smiled and replied, "Who's he going to tell?"
