GRAND KNIGHT'S COMMENTS
Brother Knights,
Another fraternal year is rapidly drawing to a close. Once again we can look back on our council activities and accomplishments and conclude - a job well done. Thank you to all our council members and especially the officers for your unselfish work ethic devoting your time and effort to the success of our council.
During these past two years our council ranks have grown with new members and transfers from 129 to about 160. This is a testament to our council that so many fine Catholic gentlemen would choose to join us. As you know our order is committed to "charity" and those in need will be with us always. It is our responsibility to determine how our ever-growing council can best serve those in need in our family circles, our parish, and our community.
During these past two years I've come to better understand why I chose to join the Knights of Columbus. I've had the opportunity to view the larger workings of the Knights of Columbus at the District and State levels. If you think that being an officer in our local council is a significant commitment, you would be humbled to see what is required to be a state officer. Certainly this is not for everyone but these important roles must be filled and it's good to know that the order is in good hands.
Most importantly during these past two years I've had the opportunity to get to know our council members very well and what an exemplary group of Catholic gentlemen we have! We are committed to our order's pledge to charity, unity, and fraternity in a totally unselfish way. Thank you for your support these past two years. Let's continue our fine work in the future.
Vivat Jesus,
John Bellono
DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT'S COMMENTS
I was contemplating the Norte Dame controversy last week and it seems the travesty of the whole issue is that it pits Catholics against Catholics. "Conservative Catholics" is erroneously used divisively... there's no such thing as a "conservative catholic". On these life issues we practice our faith or we do not. When we do not, we sin. "I'm not a conservative Catholic" is merely a poor excuse to not practice our faith.
Moral relativism is the disease that erodes the mortar between the bricks of the foundation of our Catholic faith. Seemingly innocuous effort to find 'common ground', on its face seems quite reasonable.
However, great caution must be exercised against alternative agendas for such an approach.
"We don't need a world to change the church, we need a church that will change the world" -GK Chesterton.
Vivat Jesus,
Bob Spuhl
EDITOR'S COMMENTS
This month we have added a new feature and that is the Faithful Navigator Comments. Since we have member of our Council that are 4th Degree Knights, this years outgoing Faithful Navigator had asked if we could include space in the Shepherd's Watch for 4th Degree news. From my point of view that is an outstanding idea. We have from time to time included 4 th Degree news and Exemplification information, but this brings increases communication amongst Alabama Knights of Columbus, which is a very good thing.
I want to remind all of you that June 14 is Flag Day. Please display the flag of our Republic. This is a sign of respect and support for the Republic.
Vivat Jesus,
The Editor
FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR'S COMMENTS
Sir Knights,
This month marks the completion of my tenure as Faithful Navigator. It has been an honor to represent our Assembly and I will continue to support it. Sir Knight Paul Adams has been elected as the Faithful Navigator for the upcoming fraternal year. I would like to thank Paul for his commitment to our 4th Degree Assembly.
The 4th Degree Honor Guard will be presenting a Flag Retirement ceremony on Flag Day, June 14. You can bring your weathered flags to this ceremony at the 4080 Council hall for proper destruction.
Also, there will a 4 th Degree Exemplification on Saturday, June 27 at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Fort Payne. I would like to call on all 3rd Degree Knights to take this step to Full Knighthood. Please contact me for further details.
I have enjoyed the opportunity to learn the backgrounds of our Past Faithful Navigators during the past year. I was unable to highlight all of them, but would like list them along with their term in office.

Transitional Deacon Ordination
On Saturday, June 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd, Bishop Baker will ordain our own Good Shepherd parishioner, Roy Runkle, a Transitional Deacon. Earlier this year we supported Roy with a donation to defray the cost of his studies. This was our council's way of supporting the Knights of Columbus Priesthood Scholarship fund. Another way we can support Roy and our parish and diocese is with our presence at his ordination on June 6. Let's see a large group of Knights there in support of Roy and our priests!
Remembrances
Recently the Fathers of two of our Brother Knights passed from this world to their eternal rewards.Tim Sullivan's Father passed away on April 9 (Holy Thursday) in Illinois at the age of 83. Please keep Tim, his wife Michele, and their family in your prayers.
Raul Alonso's Father Reinaldo passed away on May 12 in Miami at the age of 78. Please keep Raul, his wife Marilyn, and their family in your prayers.
May the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
Supporting the Boy Scouts
At the May 19 officers meeting, the officers approved a $500 donation to the Good Shepherd scouting program. These funds will pay for items to be purchased in the near future by the Scouts. As mentioned elsewhere in the newsletter, we are very grateful for the Boy Scouts assistance at our Mother's Day breakfast.
Flag Day
Sunday, June 14 is Flag Day. Each year Council 4080 on Leeman Ferry Road conducts a flag retirement ceremony on that date. Please contact Council 4080 Grand Knight Gordon Keene (irishskr@bellsouth.net) if you have any old flags that you would like to be respectfully "retired."
Hospice Family Care Golf Tournament Fundraiser
The Hospice Family Care Golf Tournament Fundraiser will be on Friday, July 31. Brother Knight Vince Guarin is a member of the Hospice Family Care Board of Directors. He is heavily involved in the Hospice Family Care Golf Tournament Fundraiser to be held Friday, July 31 at the Redstone Arsenal course. Vince is soliciting volunteers to help out with the many tasks it takes to run such an event. All volunteers will receive a continental breakfast and lunch. Breakfast is at 7:00 AM and tee-off time is at 8:00. You're also welcome to participate as a golfer - the fee of $60 each (which is very reasonable) includes greens fees, cart, continental breakfast, lunch, hole prizes, tournament prizes, and giveaways - the more golfers the better. Please contact Vince Guarin directly at 880-6928 for further information.
Vince also adds..."For your information, seven years ago, when anyone said "Hospice", they meant us because we were the only organization providing hospice services to residents of Madison County. Now there are 14 other hospices. But we, Hospice Family Care, remain the only "not-for-profit" hospice in Madison County."
Mother’s Day Annual Breakfast Wrap-up
On Sunday May 10, our Council once again had a very successful Mother's Day Breakfast. Brother Knights and Boy Scouts were out in force to handle the crunch crowd of 306 hungry customers. This was our chance to shine for the parish and we did. Thanks to all our volunteers - it was a job well done!
Council Family Picnic Wrap-Up
On Saturday May 16, about 60 Knights with their families and guests gathered for our second annual family picnic. We dodged the rain and storms that came through the area and went to Plan B inside the Family Life Center. Everyone had a great time - the kids stayed occupied with the game tables, etc. and our main dish (Gibson's Barbecue) went over well. A Special thanks goes to Chris Long, Zach Wible, Bob Spuhl, and Ben Cumbie for their efforts. We hope to see even a larger turnout next year.
Rosaries for our Soldiers
Our Brother Knight Merv Eberhardt is also spearheading an effort to make corded rosaries for the military. If you are interested in joining this effort, please contact Merv by email or 256-882-6819 (home) or 256-457-4881 (cell). Please consider supporting our troops in this worthwhile activity. Some background information is available at the “How To Make A Rosary” link on the Our Lady’s Rosary Makers home page.
St. Vincent de Paul Society
The following is a brief description from the web. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a worldwide organization founded in 1833 by six university students in Paris under the patronage of St. Vincent de Paul. Today the Society includes almost 900,000 members spread among 46,000 confraternities in 130 countries of five continents.
The Society's purpose is to provide direct aid to those who suffer, and to help individuals reduce and even eliminate the causes of their suffering, themselves. Society members use their own resources, sharing not only possessions but also the valuable gift of their presence.
Recently there has been an inquiry about establishing a St. Vincent de Paul group at Good Shepherd. Both the Knights and the St. Vincent de Paul Society have a strong focus on charitable works. The Holy Spirit Parish St. Vincent de Paul group is well established and has been active for many years. If you have an interest in learning more about this society and possibly help establish a group at our parish, please contact John Bellono at 256-882-6767 for more information.

Canned Goods Drive
Don't forget those canned goods. Each Knight is asked to bring just one canned good or money to the monthly Council meeting. The food or money goes to the Church pantry for support of the poor and hungry in our community. Remember charity is a Knight's duty, not a courtesy.
Volunteer Hours
Volunteer Hours are due in January of each year to State Office. Please keep a running total of your hours during the year. It would be nice to report them on a monthly basis to the Deputy Grand Knight, as to not make this a major data collection effort at the end of the year. Please tally your volunteer hours for Council, Church, and Community activities and forward them to the Deputy Grand knight as soon as possible but no later than January 15 of each year. It's a time consuming activity to accumulate responses from all our members and summarize them as required - the sooner you can provide them to the Deputy Grand Knight the better. We often overlook community activities such as CASA, Burrett Museum, Habitat for Humanity, Harrison Hardware, and neighborhood swimming associations, etc. Please include these types of community organization activities in your totals. As you compile your volunteer hours, reflect how your time spent in the past year and prayerfully consider how you might better serve those in need in the future. May God Bless all volunteers everywhere no matter where in the world they are.
PRAYER LINE
Taking care of our Brother Knights in distress is one of basic principles
espoused by our founder, Father McGivney. Please remember our sick Brother
Knights and those deceased in your prayers. If anyone knows of a Brother Knight
in distress, contact Kirk Foeller (885-9788 or email).
Remember
the Prayer Line also includes family members and friends. Being Catholic is not
a requirement to have a person's name placed on the prayer Line.
A good person regardless of
his or her religious beliefs should have our prayers offered to hopefully relieve their distress.

The Short Story Corner
This month's Short Story comes by way of Shirley Creasman. She is a long time friend of the editor, who
lives in Sterling Heights, Michigan.
Shirley & Marcy Goodnest
By Anonymous
A mom was concerned about her kindergarten son walking to school. He didn't want his
mother to walk with him. She wanted to give him the feeling that he had some independence but yet
know that he was safe.
So she had an idea of how to handle it. She asked a neighbor if she would please follow him to school
in the mornings, staying at a distance, so he probably wouldn't notice her.
She said that since she was up early with her toddler anyway, it would be a good way for them to get
some exercise as well, so she agreed.
The next school day, the neighbor and her little girl set out following behind Timmy as he walked to
school with another neighbor girl he knew. She did this for the whole week.
As the two walked and chatted, kicking stones and twigs, Timmy's little friend noticed the same lady
was following them, as she seemed to do every day all week.
Finally she said to Timmy, 'Have you noticed that lady following us to school all week? Do you know her?
Timmy nonchalantly replied, 'Yeah, I know who she is.'
The little girl said, 'Well, who is she?'
'That's just Shirley Goodnest,' Timmy replied, and her daughter Marcy.'
'Shirley Goodnest?' Said the little friend. 'Who the heck is she and why is she following us?'
'Well,' Timmy explained, 'every night my Mom and I say the 23rd Psalm with my prayers, 'cuz she worries
about me so much. And in the Psalm, it says, 'Shirley Goodnest and Marcy shall follow me all the
days of my life', so I guess I'll just have to get used to it!'

Questions for the Mind
June's Questions and Answers:
What is the origin of the phrase 'Rob Peter to Pay Paul?'
One story has it that the phrase alludes to the fact that on 17 Dec 1540 the abbey church of St Peter, Westminster, was advanced to the dignity of a cathedral by letters of patent, but ten years later was joined to the diocese of London, and many of its estates were appropriated to the repairs of St Paul's Cathedral.
Wyclif circa 1380 wrote 'How should God approve that you rob Peter, and give this robbery to Paul in the name of Christ (Select Works, III, 174...."). This can be found in Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable.
So the exact origin is not really known.
What is the origin of the phrase 'Getting Bombed?' " A bombard is a leather jug, which holds 8 pints or 4 quarts. A full bombard of ale would make you drunk.
What is the origin of the phrase 'Spring Cleaning?' " In merry old England hay was used to cover kitchen floors. The layer of hay in the kitchen was finally hauled out of the house when the weather turned warm in the spring.
Close to the Egyptian pyramids, workers dig boat pits. Actual boats are to be buried in them to ensure the pharaoh's journey to heaven. What kind of wood was used to build the ships? Cedar: In 1954, a boat was discovered next to the Cheops pyramid. It was disassembled into 1224 pieces. Rebuilt, it is 43 meters in length with an upturned prow and ten pairs of oars. The boat is held together with ropes and wooden pegs. No metal was used. The boat is displayed in its own museum next to the pyramid.
July's Questions:
Where did the Egyptian obtain the Cedar that they used for the royal boat construction? What language is the term Nome Deplume from? What is the 'Doctrine of Place? When did Americans and British start having different accents? What day is considered the birth date of the Church?
