So....you'd like to send a gift.
Bless you! The most practical thing, of course, is money. Geographically, Hawai'i is the most remote place on Earth (or so I've read) and it's expensive to transport massive items here. Plus, you'd have to get a box and pack your gift well enough to survive the voyage, and tape it all up with sticky plastic, and then go to the Post Office and stand in line....and when it finally got here, I'd have to stand in line at the Post Office to receive it.In most cases, it's much easier for both of us if you simply put money in an envelope, put a postage stamp on it and drop it in a mailbox. Don't even bother converting it to a check or money order, which I would only have to convert back to cash when I received it. Send the Green Stuff: U.S. currency.
I know, we've all been told since we were tiny children, "Don't ever mail cash!!" -- as if the Universe would vaporize it (or maybe vaporize us, for mailing it!). But I've discovered, in reality, that's one of those many fears -- like The Fear of Being in a Car Wreck Without Freshly Laundered Underwear! -- that we can live quite well without.
Honestly, I've sent cash in the mail numerous times, and it has never once vaporized. Not even partially. Nor has it been stolen by anyone along the way. There are so few people with X-ray vision, and the few who have it are ethically above stealing (that's one of the requirements for receiving the gift of X-ray vision in the first place). This is another one of those Fears we can do without.
Please trust me on this. The effect may even be quite liberating for you!
- Get an envelope (I recommend the standard #10, which will hold perfectly a standard sheet of letter-size paper folded in thirds).
- Put your return address in the upper left-hand corner.
- Put the following address, carefully and legibly, in the center:
- DON BECKETT
- PO BOX 1672
- HILO HI 96721
- (If you're outside the U.S.A., put U.S.A. here.)
- Put the necessary postage in the upper right-hand corner.
- Fold a sheet (or 2 or 3) of letter-size paper in thirds, to fit the envelope (this is a great place to rid yourself of yesterday's junk mail!).
- Enclose your gift in the folded paper.
- Put it in the envelope. Seal the envelope.
- Hold the envelope between your palms for a moment.
- Love the gift you're sending, and love yourself for sending it.
- Say to the envelope (either mentally or aloud, as you visualize me receiving it):
"Go safely and quickly into the hands of this Don Beckett!"
(I know it seems weird, but it works!)
- Mail the envelope and release all thoughts about it.
PRESTO! -- You're finished. Congratulations and Many Thanks!
