It has generally been taught that these precepts were adopted from the Meiji Emperor. However, according to Hiroshi Doi (via Rick Rivard), "Usui Sensei created (the) Gokai (the 5 principles) getting hints from a book, Kenzen no Genri ("Fundamentals of Wellness", by Dr. Suzuki Bizan, published in 1914). The book says 'Just for today, do not get angry, do not feel fear, be honest, work hard, and be kind to others.' " |
