These photos were taken by my Alaskan friend Mistlebee, on the island of Unalaska. These are her comments about the terrain:

The mountains here are all tundra and the lowlands tend to have a lot of marshes in and streams that cut through the tundra. Rainfall is an essential part of the ecology because there is very little topsoil and that is created by decomposing tundra moss. Few plants send their roots into the soil, most preferring to rest them in the moist moss.

The underlying rock is a combination of layers of sea bottom sediment and lava. Valleys like the one above are pretty much everywhere on the island. There are very little flat-lands due to the fact that the islands were caused by tectonic upheavals and volcanic eruptions. Cloud cover averages 273 days a year and the mean temperature for the island is 50-60 degrees fahrenheit in summer and 10-35 degrees in winter, though temperatures occasionally go beyond the averages by as much as 30 degrees.
