Some members of the Society have been involved with Clann Albainn (Children of Scotland) which protested the impropriety of having the name ‘Cumberland’ — the Butcher of the Scots — memorialised in an allegedly Scottish city. On the morning of the 250th anniversary of Culloden Dunedin people woke up to discover one of the main streets, Cumberland St., had been renamed Culloden Rd.

Anyway, despite good media coverage the Clann still needed to explain the case, slowly, to the City’s officialdom. The next day they visited the mayor and subsequently submitted an application to the City Council.

Since then, to raise awareness of self-determination issues the Clann has postered the street, raised statues, and various other stunts, (click here to see the Clann's stunt), but none has attracted the public’s and media’s attention like the original renaming. It raised a national media storm — even appearing on the other side of the world in European newspapers, and was a matter of debate in the city for several months.

The challenge is open to Scottish students to rename the original Cumberland St in Edinburgh
