Club
History:
Stevenage Borough Football Club.
Stevenage Borough were set up
under the original name, Stevenage F.C. back in
1976 after Stevenage Athletic folded. A group of
enthusiasts formed the club playing at King
George V Playing Fields in the Chiltern Youth
league, which was followed by the move to
intermediate status when they joined the Wallspan
Southern Combination League.
In 1980, they moved into Broadhall Way with
Stevenage Borough council as their landlords and
this is how the "Borough" suffix came
to be added to the club's name.
After joining the United Counties league in 1980,
they achieved the Division One title and cup
double in their debut season. In 1983, they
played in the Premier of the United Counties
league before bravely stepping across to the
Servowarm Isthmian League Div. 2 North. They
finished as champions and reached the quarter
final of the FA Vase, but losing to Southall,
2-0. They also reached the Herts Senior Cup
final, but lost to an impressive Barnet side 4-0.
They didn't make too much impact in the 1986/87
season in Div. 1 and relegation back to Div. 2
North came the next season. Back in the league
they entered in 1983, they came 4th
and reached the FA Cup 3rd Qualifying
Round, only to be disqualified for fielding an
unregistered player. They finished 4th
once again in 1989/90 after blowing a chance for
promotion. They did, however, win the TSI
Floodlit Cup against Baldock Town.
At the start of the 90/91 season, Paul Fairclough
was appointed manager with Vic Clarke at his side
and they romped away with the Div. 2 North title
with an excellent 107 points, scoring 122 goals
in the league while keeping a 100% home record.
In 91/92, they did suffer early cup exits but
they won the newly named Diadora League Div.1
title. They won the league by 14 points from
Yeading, despite being top for ¾ of the season.
In 1992/93, the club's first appearance in the
Premier, Boro' finished 7th. Dulwich
Hamlet destroyed an unbeaten home record of 44
games, stretching two seasons. They did make it
to the FA Trophy last 32 but were beaten by Grays
Athletic. In 1993/94 Stevenage Boro' finally
reached the Vauxhall Conference by pipping
Enfield to the title after 31 wins gained 97
points and after a shaky start to the Conference
campaign, the club pulled together over Christmas
and finished 5th.
In 1995/96, the club reached their peak, by
winning the GM Vauxhall Conference title in only
their second season. But they were refused entry
to the Football League, and rumours of bribery
towards Torquay were heard but unfounded. They
tried to retain the title in 1996/97 but could
only finish 3rd, also reaching the FA
Cup 3rd Round Proper and losing 2-0
away to Birmingham City.
The 1997/98 season wasn't too successful in the
league, but broke boundaries by reaching the FA
Cup 4th round, holding giants
Newcastle United to a 1-1 draw at Broadhall Way
before losing 2-1 on Tyneside to a disputed goal.
In 1998/99, Fairclough was dismissed by Victor
Green and was replaced by Richard Hill and more
recently, Phil Wallace replaced Victor Green as
chairman.
The 1999/2000 season started brilliantly, with
six wins from six games, but a massive slump saw
Boro' failing to gain promotion. In March that
season, it also cost Richard Hill's job. Steve
Wignall came in with expectations high, but he
went two weeks later with leading scorer Carl
Alford, to Doncaster.
Paul Fairclough returned over the summer, and
Arsenal came in a pre-season friendly. Boro'
enjoyed a successful season, with losses a few,
but drawing too much meant that they failed to
challenge the contenders at the top.
2001 saw a summer of signings, which seemed to
show that Cloughie wass intending to be with the
best in the following season. Also that summer,
the new away stand began construction, plus
prestigious visits from Spurs and Cambridge in
friendlies. The 2001/02 saw the entry of Boro'
into the LDV Vans Trophy for the first time in
their history
