ENGINEERING/QUALITY
The sophisticated, sequentially fuel-injected 6-cylinder engine with
Double Overhead Cams and 24 valves produces 212 hp @ 4600 rpm and the kind of
torque (275 lb.-ft. @ 3200 rpm) needed for pulling a boat or reaching a desolate
beach. In fact, 96% of that torque occurs at only 2000 rpm, giving you power to
handle up to 1719 pounds of payload (occupants, equipment and cargo) while
towing up to 5000 pounds (see towing details below).
But there's more to performance than power. There's also the sure-footed
traction of full-time four-wheel drive and a 2-speed transfer case that doubles
your gearing and gives you more options off-road or in heavy snow. The
second-gear start mode of the 4-speed automatic transmission can help control
wheelspin in slippery situations. And there's the 10.8 inches of running ground
clearance and 8.9 inches of rear suspension travel, providing plenty of room
between your Land Cruiser's protective skid plates and off-road obstacles.
- Front And Rear Locking Differentials: Locked with just a twist of the
dash mounted dial, the optional locking front and rear differentials divide
power equally between both wheels on an axle. When combined with the standard
locking viscous-coupling center differential -- which directs power to the front
or rear of the vehicle depending on traction needs -- you get more sure footing
to tackle tough terrain.
- Variable Assist Power Steering: Rugged, power-assisted recirculating
ball steering gives you less assist at high speeds (for better road feel) and
more assist at low speeds (to ease parking).
- DOHC And Four Valves Per Cylinder: Like drinking out of two straws
instead of one, Double-Overhead-Cam, four-valve-per-cylinder engines work more
efficiently, producing greater horsepower and fuel economy.
- Computer-Controlled Engine: The engine's sophisticated computer
precisely adjusts fuel injection, ignition and other systems. It also networks
with the automatic transmission computer for smoother shifts.
- Electronically Controlled Automatic Overdrive Transmission (ECT):
Toyota's 4-speed ECT employs a computer to monitor driving conditions (speed,
load, etc.) and your actions (throttle position, etc.) to maximize gear
selection efficiency. It also networks with the engine computer for smoother
shifting.
- Overdrive: This top gear delivers quieter, more economical driving.
An off switch keeps the transmission in third at highway speeds for more engine
braking when driving on inclines or for more power when towing.
- Power/Normal Shift Modes: "Normal" and "Power" modes let you choose
between a sportier feel (stay in lower gears longer and downshift more readily)
or maximum fuel economy (upshift sooner and downshift less readily). Note: at
wide-open throttle, mode selection is bypassed for maximum performance.
- Rugged Suspension: The live-axle design enhances performance by
helping keep tires perpendicular to the road over a range of payloads. Coil
springs provide on-road performance and comfort, while the stabilizer bars
(mounted high above off-road obstacles) reduce body roll, giving you a smoother,
more stable ride.
- Towing: The Land Cruiser can tow up to 5,000 pounds. A Toyota Class
III hitch receiver and sway control device are required additional equipment.
Ask your dealer for the 1997 Trailer Towing Guide for GCWR limits and
other details.
- Knock Control System: Knock sensors reduce detonation ("pinging") by
adjusting spark plug timing, thus optimizing engine performance, fuel economy
and durability under various driving conditions.
- Stainless Steel Exhaust: The durable stainless steel exhaust system
assists catalyst warm-up, which helps reduce emissions.
- Off-Road Protection: High ground clearance (up to 10.8 inches) and
skid plates help protect the fuel tank and transfer case from off-road objects.
- Fuel Pump Speed Control: This feature reduces the speed of the fuel
pump under light engine loads to enhance its durability.
- Electronic Fuel Injection: Computer-controlled sequential multi-port
fuel injection helps improve fuel economy, performance and cold starts.
- Rust Resistance: Most inner and outer body panels consist of
corrosion resistant steels coated with a zinc and iron alloy. After dipping the
body in a phosphate bath to ensure even inaccessible areas resist rust, we apply
a special wax sealer to body crevices and anti-chip paint to key areas. In
addition, a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coating helps protect wheelwells and other
body areas against chips that lead to rust.

SAFETY
In your Land Cruiser, you ride high above most traffic, and with its
expansive windows, you get a commanding view of what lies ahead -- sights,
scenery and sometimes potential problems. The full-time 4WD, responsive 212-hp
engine and power-assisted steering can help you avoid trouble before it starts.
When that's not possible, it's nice to know you're surrounded by a solid
4800-pound body-on-frame structure with side-door impact beams, front and rear
crumple zones and dual air bags. In fact, throughout your Land Cruiser, you'll
discover a wealth of safety equipment so important in an all-weather,
all-terrain vehicle.
- Large Mud-&-Snow-Rated Tires: For that extra traction you'll need
when the weather is less than cooperative.
- Dual Air Bag Supplemental Restraint System: In a severe frontal
collision, the standard dual air bags inflate to help limit the motion of your
head and upper body. The entire process -- inflation, protection, deflation --
takes less than a second. You must still wear your seatbelt at all times since
air bags are a supplemental restraint system only and won't inflate in less
severe or non frontal impacts. Do not sit or place objects close to an air bag.
Do not place child seats in any front-passenger seat. The force of a deploying
air bag SRS may cause serious injury. For more information and instruction on
air bag SRS and child seat usage, see the Owner's Manual.
- Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS): This standard system helps prevent
wheels from locking up during a hard stop. When the wheels begin to lock, the
computer pulses the brake pressure more rapidly than humanly possible, allowing
the tires to rotate for better control. During emergency braking, you don't need
to "pump the brakes" -- ABS does it for you.
- Ventilated Front And Rear Disc Brakes: Vents allow cooling air to
pass through the disc and help resist brake fade.
- Brake Proportioning Valve: The rear Load-Sensing Proportioning Valve
varies the hydraulic pressure sent to the rear brakes to help reduce wheel
lock-up for improved braking control.
- Three-Point Seatbelts With ALR/ELR:
The Automatic Locking Retractor for
all 3-point passenger shoulder belts lets you secure a baby seat without a
seatbelt locking clip. The Emergency Locking Retractor allows the seatbelt to
extend or retract with your movement, yet locks it during a sudden stop.
- Laminated And Tempered Safety Glass: Throughout the Land Cruiser,
these special types of glass help minimize injuries in an accident.
- Crumple Zones:
Body panels at the front and rear are designed to deform
progressively in a collision to help absorb the impact.
- Two-Turn Driver Door Lock: The two-turn door lock permits only
unlocking the driver's door when the key is turned once, or all doors when the
key is turned again.
- Child Protector Door Locks: This disables the rear doors, preventing
small children from inadvertently opening them.
- Toyota Vehicle Intrusion Protection System RS-3000: When activated,
the V.I.P system accessory disables the starter and protects all entry points by
sounding an alarm if a door, hatch or trunk is opened. It includes a glass
breakage sensor and a remote transmitter that arms/disarms the unit and
locks/unlocks the doors from up to 30 feet away.
COMFORT
Climb in and you'll find the seats upholstered in standard,
richly-textured cloth. Prefer the touch of leather? The optional Leather Trim
Package gives you slipper soft surfaces plus power front seat controls. And with
the optional Third Seat Package, you'll have room for yourself and up to six
friends or family members. When not in use, the third seats conveniently stow
away to the sides.
Steering wheel not exactly where you want it? Then tilt it your way. In
addition, a driver's-side master control puts you in charge of the power
windows, door locks and outside mirrors. The windows offer 60-seconds of
retained power after you kill the engine, while the doors have an anti-lockout
feature. CFC-free AC keeps you cool in summer, front and rear heaters keep you
warm in winter and cruise control helps you fight fatigue on long
trips.
Carrying cargo? The split tailgate/hatch opens wide to a
cavernous carpeted cargo bay. Fold the middle seat for 90.9 cubic feet of
storage space (75.1 cubic feet with third seat). That should accommodate all
your camping gear for a weekend of so-called "roughing it."
We also went to great lengths to reduce noise levels in your Land
Cruiser:
- A highly rigid body structure with key structural reinforcements
- Glass wool insulation under the hood, dashboard and fenders
- Vibration-dampening steel and asphalt sheets
- Specially designed crankshaft bearings and exhaust manifold heat
insulators
- An aluminum oil pan with integrated stiffener
STYLING
Standard chrome grille and trim. 16" styled steel wheels

stand-out aggressive appearance.
Style options and accessories:
- Tilt/Slide Moonroof: The Land Cruiser's optional power moonroof gives
you four choices: close it with the sliding sunshade; open the shade for tinted
sunshine without cold air; tilt it open for a touch of the elements or retract
the glass for air, raw sun and very little wind.
- Black Front-End Mask: Add a little attitude while helping protect
your Land Cruiser from minor road debris, branches or other elements intent on
scratching the front end. Snugly-fit, the mask comes with a storage bag.
