How to get to #JCFicHaven, #Resistance_is_Futile, or #Buffy/Spike using mIRC instead of the web interfaces.
(#JCFicHaven is a room for my YahooGroups' Janeway/Chakotay list called JCFicHaven.
#Resistance_is_Futile is the chatroom for the Kim/7 list of the same name.
#Buffy/Spike is a room for BtVS and AtS fans.)
First, you must want to use IRC (Internet Relay Chat). It sounds a bit complicated, but is not difficult. This list of instructions might seem a bit long or daunting; HOWEVER, once they are finished you will not have to type a slew of annoying commands every single time you connect. Most of what you want to do will be done.
Second, I like the new mIRC 6.0x as my client. I installed it and minutes later I was already seeing cool new stuff I could do. These instructions are based on 6.03 and should be very similar for other versions. (Don't type the "" in my examples when you enter commands.) There are lots of other free clients available for Windows computers and other Operating Systems.
OK, now the overview. There are some basic steps you need to complete:
- Get and install mIRC
- Configure mIRC and connect to a server
- Register your Nick
- Configure mIRC some more
- Get and install mIRC. (This takes download time plus about 60 seconds.)
- Go to http://mirc.com
- Download version 6.0x
- Install it (If you had a previous version I would make a backup just in case, and choose to retain previous settings.)
- Start mIRC
- Configure mIRC and connect to a server
- In mIRC, go to File/Options/Connect and fill out your information as you want it to appear
- Your settings
- Include your first and second choice of nicks
- I suggest clicking "Invisible mode" to keep the perverts at bay.
- Under File/Options/Connect/Options you can set reconnect options (select Retry to setup auto-reconnect to try next server in the list on failure).
- Select Webnet from the IRC Network or Server Group list, and then click "Connect to IRC Server"
- Once you are connected, type JCFicHaven or Resistance_is_Futile in the join dialog. If that does not open automatically, you can type "/join #JCFicHaven" or "/join # Resistance_is_Futile" or "/join #Buffy/Spike", in any window and this should put you into the channel.
- Register your Nick
- You can only register the nick you are currently using.
- Type "/nick the_name_you_want" (If it's available you will get this nick, if not you will have to try again. Adding a number to the end will let you have simple but recognizable nick - like anne3.)
- Type "/nickserv register <password> <email>" (substitute the password you want, and your email and Don't type the <>)
- You will receive an email from Webnet asking you to verify your registration. It may ask you to paste a line like: /nickserv verify #############. Paste that line into mIRC. If that fails, change it to /msg nickserv verify #############.
- Advanced - if you get disconnected and find your ghost when you return type "/nickserv ghost nick " to free up your nick
- Advanced - if someone is using your name, you will have to take it back, type " /nickserv recover nick <password>". You might have to repeat the command to release your name from the server's protective custody. Once it is free, just reclaim it with the /nick command. You will have to give your password to keep it.
- Configure mIRC some more.
Each time you enter, Nickserv will demand that you identify yourself and prove you own the nick you are using. If you don't it will change you to Guest#####. To avoid this you can type " /NickServ IDENTIFY <password>". A better option - you can add this command and others to the perform on connect section.
- Go to File/Options/Connect/Perform and check "On connect, perform these command:"
- Now you need some commands:
- /NickServ IDENTIFY <password>
- /umode -mpeMin
- The last option allows you to receive files. That ability is turned off by default on this server group. Even if you set mIRC to receive files, you will still be asked whether you want to receive each file so you don't have to worry about unwanted files clogging your hard drive.
Also, you can set your favorite channels to autojoin when you connect to their server group.
- Click on the Channel Folders button on the toolbar. (It's probably the 3rd button from the left.)
- Add (click add) the channel you need.
- Type #JCFicHaven or #Resistance_is_Futile or #Buffy/Spike into the Channel field.
- Select "Webnet" from the Network list. You need to click "add" to get the list. Don't ask me why. :-)
- Click "Auto-join channel on connect"
- Click "OK"
- Now it is in the channels list AND it will be automatically joined when you connect. (You can thank me later ;-)
- Now the acid test. Exit and restart mIRC. It should put you into the room of your choice. If not, double-check your typing and look around options for errors.
- Other stuff
- Viruses!!! Be cautions if you fiddle with the DCC settings. File/Options/DCC/Folders prevents you from receiving files that might contain viruses. There are many viruses that spread via IRC and this pretty much blocks them. By default it should be set to "ignore all except" and "Turn ignore back on in 3 minutes". (You still need and anti-virus program.)
- Cute parting lines can be added under File/Options/IRC/Messages/Quit Message
- You can get sound files from others by typing "!nick filename.wav", using the actual nick and filename with proper .wav or .mp3 extension.
- Lots of messages from the server appear in the status window (the first tab), If you hear a double ping you should look to see if Nickserv has forgotten who you are and wants you to Identify again, or whatever.
- Aliases, popups, scripts and all sorts of things can be created to amuse and annoy your friends. You can get more details online or from chat junkies.
